Qingdao Markets
Qingdao
is touted for having some of the best shopping in hundreds
of miles, but, as often happens, the greatest finds are
tucked down sidestreets where visitors fear to tread. The
following are some of the best places to spend hours
browsing through unique items that don't have to tell you
they're 'Made in China'.
Change Le Lu Market
(A.K.A. Cultural Market - Wenhua Shichang)
This recently renovated market sells wholesale books and
magazines, Mao memorabilia, coins, paper money, stamps and
phone cards. The new pedestrian street outside the main
entrance has "antique" style furniture shops and art
galleries featuring traditional and modern styles. Visit on
weekends when inside the courtyard area of the book market
there is a flea market with porcelain, vases, jade, jewelry,
watches, clocks, polished stones, books, personal effects,
and bric a brac all laid out on blankets on the ground.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 218, 222.
Jimo Rd. Market -
Jimo Lu Shichang
The place to go for deals on clothes, accessories, and a
variety of non-precious souvenirs, Jimo Rd. Market is a
massive indoor collection of merchant stalls on Liaocheng Lu
near the Municipal Hospital (on Jiaozhou Lu). The ground
floor offers watches, sea pearls, jade, jewelry, Chinese
objets d'art, and stationery. The second floor has shoes,
wallets, and bags of all kinds. The two massive subterranean
floors house all kinds of clothing, though much of it is of
indeterminable quality. In general, Jimo Lu is an excellent
shopping place if you have loads of time to browse and
bargain. Shops usually close around 6 pm.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 228, 218, 222.
Taidong Walking
Street - Taidong Buxing Jie
Terrific cinemas, restaurants, and clothing can be found one
block north of Taidong 1 Lu. Large department stores along
the thoroughfare have everything from fancy perfumes and
watches to the latest big name Chinese fashions to every
imaginable home appliance. Most of the smaller shops in the
area are dedicated
to clothing and accessories, and there are more than a few
tailors who do traditional and modern outfits. After dark
you might find some treasures buried under the crowds that
frequent the night market, but the array of karaoke outfits
and hot pot (huo guo) restaurants are a better bet.
Bus lines: 2, 11, 25, 104, 218, 222, 225.
Zhongshan Road -
Zhongshan Lu
Formerly Qingdao's commercial centre, Zhongshan Road is
still home to brand name clothing shops and well-stocked
camera stores. A visit to this area can be combined with an
excursion around old Qingdao, as Zhongshan Rd. was the main
commercial street of Qingdao for almost all of the 20th
century. Long a favourite of locals, there is an established
fabric and tailors market near the corner of Beijing Lu.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 312, 321, 316, 218.
Computer City -
Dianzi Xinxi Cheng
A huge collection of shops selling all things tech, i.e.
computer hardware, disk memory, digital cameras, printers,
mp3 players. Find blank discs, headphones, gadgets and small
electronic accessories in the basement. Computer City
vendors stock international brands, as well as no name DIY
computers and parts, and bargaining can normally get you a
slightly better deal than what is initially offered.
Bus lines: 218, 2, 5.
Flower and Bird
Market - Hua Niao Shichang
Local bazaar selling tropical and coldwater ornamental fish,
aquariums, houseplants, vases, bronze and porcelain
figurines, penjing (bonzai) trays and plant pots, polished
stones, as well as fish, birds, puppies and kittens. Located
about one block south of Taidong 1 Lu near Wal Mart. Bus
lines: 11.
Plant Market - Zhiwu
Shichang
In a 2 story complex near the main flower and bird market,
down the hill closer to Yan' an Lu. The ground floor has an
excellent selection of fresh cut flowers, as well as silk
and plastic varieties and other materials for flower
arranging. Upstairs there are potted plants, polished
stones, wooden plant and stone stands, and porcelain/
pottery figurines. A tranquil space with a botanical
atmosphere. |
