Qingdao is a beautiful coastal city that lies at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula. Located in Jiaozhou Bay facing the Yellow Sea, Qingdao is also a well-known holiday resort in China. The city has seven urban districts and five county level cities under its jurisdiction. Before troops were garrisoned here by the imperial court of Qing in 1891, Qingdao had been a small fishing village. It became a German concession in 1897 and was occupied by Japan in 1914. The city reverted to Chinese rule in 1922, but was occupied by Japan again during the Second World War. Today it is one of the most important open coastal cities and one of the independent cities with state planning and budgeting powers. It has provincial power in economic management. Its major industries include trade, light industry, tourism and oceanography research. The uniqueness of the city consists in its architecture and an attractive urban landscape. Qingdao will host the 29th Sailing Olympic Games in August 2008.

Qingdao Markets
Qingdao is touted for having some of the best shopping in hundreds of miles, but, as often happens, the greatest finds are tucked down sidestreets where visitors fear to tread. The following are some of the best places to spend hours browsing through unique items that don't have to tell you they're 'Made in China'.

Change Le Lu Market (A.K.A. Cultural Market - Wenhua Shichang)
This recently renovated market sells wholesale books and magazines, Mao memorabilia, coins, paper money, stamps and phone cards. The new pedestrian street outside the main entrance has "antique" style furniture shops and art galleries featuring traditional and modern styles. Visit on weekends when inside the courtyard area of the book market there is a flea market with porcelain, vases, jade, jewelry, watches, clocks, polished stones, books, personal effects, and bric a brac all laid out on blankets on the ground.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 218, 222.

Jimo Rd. Market - Jimo Lu Shichang
The place to go for deals on clothes, accessories, and a variety of non-precious souvenirs, Jimo Rd. Market is a massive indoor collection of merchant stalls on Liaocheng Lu near the Municipal Hospital (on Jiaozhou Lu). The ground floor offers watches, sea pearls, jade, jewelry, Chinese objets d'art, and stationery. The second floor has shoes, wallets, and bags of all kinds. The two massive subterranean floors house all kinds of clothing, though much of it is of indeterminable quality. In general, Jimo Lu is an excellent shopping place if you have loads of time to browse and bargain. Shops usually close around 6 pm.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 228, 218, 222.

Taidong Walking Street - Taidong Buxing Jie
Terrific cinemas, restaurants, and clothing can be found one block north of Taidong 1 Lu. Large department stores along the thoroughfare have everything from fancy perfumes and watches to the latest big name Chinese fashions to every imaginable home appliance. Most of the smaller shops in the area are
dedicated to clothing and accessories, and there are more than a few tailors who do traditional and modern outfits. After dark you might find some treasures buried under the crowds that frequent the night market, but the array of karaoke outfits and hot pot (huo guo) restaurants are a better bet.
Bus lines: 2, 11, 25, 104, 218, 222, 225.

Zhongshan Road - Zhongshan Lu
Formerly Qingdao's commercial centre, Zhongshan Road is still home to brand name clothing shops and well-stocked camera stores. A visit to this area can be combined with an excursion around old Qingdao, as Zhongshan Rd. was the main commercial street of Qingdao for almost all of the 20th century. Long a favourite of locals, there is an established fabric and tailors market near the corner of Beijing Lu.
Bus lines: 2, 5, 312, 321, 316, 218.

Computer City - Dianzi Xinxi Cheng
A huge collection of shops selling all things tech, i.e. computer hardware, disk memory, digital cameras, printers, mp3 players. Find blank discs, headphones, gadgets and small electronic accessories in the basement. Computer City vendors stock international brands, as well as no name DIY computers and parts, and bargaining can normally get you a slightly better deal than what is initially offered.
